CT0 Captive Tensioner

FEBRUARY 22

Harken introduces the CT0, a Small inline tensioner to work alongside the 1.5T and 3T Captive. Hydraulic or Electric 24V options available, the CT0 works in combination with Harken's 1.5 or 3 tonnes of charging and with tops from 12 to 18 mm in diameter.

Harken 1.5 - 3T Captive Reel Winches bring Mega Yacht technology to boats 13.7–18 m (45–60 ft). Robust and compact, these below deck winches keep topsides clear for a clean, uncluttered look. Use for remote line handling: raise / lower halyard, trim / ease mainsheet—all at the touch of a button. A mechanical switch limits the stroke of the feeder to prevent overtravel. A mechanical slack line system stops the drum from turning when there is no load on the line, preventing overrides. All parts connected to electrical circuitry are positioned on the same side for maintenance. The screw bearings and gear transmission are also located on this side for easy inspection. Bearings are self-lubricated. The main gearbox is sealed and lubricated with oil.

What is the fourth speed?

DECEMBER 21

Following our article covering the 1st Speed Reduced Gearing options within the Harken winch range, we have also had some question about the 4th Speed winch and how it is used.

Although the 1st Speed Reduced Gearing is becoming more and more popular there are still applications that the 4th speed winch may work well for you. There are also a number of 4 speed winches on yachts worldwide.

The Harken 4 speed winch takes the standard 3 speed winch and adds a speed slower than 1st but faster than 2nd.

At first glance the 4 speed winch can be slightly confusing to operate, However below we will try and help clear up any confusion:

TP52's Super Series Puerto Portals

SEPTEMBER 2021

The atmosphere amongst the Teams in Puerto Portals was electric, as it’s been more than 18 months with no 52 Super Series racing. The Teams where ready and there was a definite eagerness to get back out on the water.

Harken have supplied the TP52 fleet since its beginning in 2005, working with these elite competitors to develop our Winch, Hardware and Hydraulic systems. But the relationship does not stop there. As Harken ProCare and our Authorised agent Gorilla Rigging (Hydraulic Support) are on site to offer technical support and backup to Teams during the Super Series events.

The ProCare platform allows us to proactively check the systems to prevent any potential issue. The teams are competing at the highest level which means all systems are working at their absolute limit. To keep systems performing at their best requires a skilled eye. Our day is split up between morning and evening checks. The ProCare Team carry out component monitoring during each event, looking at the condition of the winch, for example taking photography of each gear and logging this in the daily report. This report helps us to predict when parts may need to be changed out to optimise performance. It also allows us to look at increase manufacturing of specific custom components to suit this need if required.

Once the boats are heading back into dock, we are there to meet them. A quick catch up with all Boat Captains produces a possible works list for the evening, this list usually consists of proactively checking components that may have been pushed hardest during the days racing as well as a general system tune up. We work with the Boat Captains to split these checks out between ProCare and the Team allowing us to perform a full system check each night.

No stone can go unturned when you are competing at this level, every second makes a difference and all detail makes a difference!

"The first health check prior to the regatta confirmed the good state of all components and only one deflector ram seal needed changing in the morning of the second training day. Some oil around the mast base to clean up … no time on the water lost. With spares and tools available that was sorted before the sailors had gotten up from breakfast at the hotel. Happy to report a clean bill of health across the fleet on all Harken cylinders, pumps and valves."

ProCare Hydraulics Support

MCLUBE OVERVIEW

SEPTEMBER 2021

This month, we’re focusing on hardware care: we all know the importance of looking after the hardware to ensure it works more efficiently for longer, but with so many lubricants, polishes and conditioners available, we’re here to explain which work best for each job.

TOP TIP: It is important to rinse all of your hardware with fresh water after every sail to make sure that dirt, salt and debris do not build up. It is also a good idea to wash your hardware properly with warm soapy water regularly too.

For Ball-Bearing Hardware

Although very versatile and ideal for reducing friction in some circumstances, dry lubricants can actually cause more problems than solutions when used on ball-bearing products such as blocks and traveller cars. Using a dry lubricant can over-lubricate the bearings and race, causing them to skid rather than roll. This leads to ‘flat spots’ forming on the ball-bearings which causes long-term friction and inefficiency.

McLube developed the One Drop Ball-Bearing Conditioner to help prevent this from happening: used in very small quantities (the name gives this away!) OneDrop will coat the bearings, reducing friction without causing the balls to skid and repelling salt and dirt to ensure your hardware works efficiently for longer. Thsi ca also be used on all plastic winch roller bearings.

For Anything That Slides

Sailkote Dry Lubricant is perfect for reducing friction between surfaces that slide over each other: use it on anything from mast tracks to bowsprits, and spinnaker chutes to tell-tales. Sailkote can also be used on pin-stop tracks which do not use ball-bearings.

It is easy to spray or wipe on and dries immediately. Sailkote is hydrophobic so repels water and will not wash away – it stays where you put it!

For A Fast Hull

As well as looking after your hardware to ensure it works more efficiently for longer, McLube manufactures products to improve your hullspeed through the water too. Use Hullkote for the ultimate high-gloss polished finish for your hull. Not only will Hullkote protect your hull from salt, dirt and grime, but it also includes UV protection. It is entirely environmentally friendly as it is citrus-based. Hullkote is very easy to apply – wipe on with one cloth, and then use a clean cloth to wipe it away.

Hullkote is designed to use with dry-sailed boats and will last for around 20 days of hard sailing; however, it is also perfect to use for keelboats which remain in the water during regattas. For added under the waterline protection, use Antifoul Alternative which has the same benefits as Hullkote but also prevents marine growth adherence.

NORTHSTAR OF LONDON

AUGUST 2021

Now in the hands of a new owner, North Star has gone through an extensive refit this past winter in Palma. Amongst many optimisations, the decision was made to remove the manually driven pedestal winch system in favour of a fully push-button hydraulic solution.

The new direction from manual to hydraulic required rethinking the winch package completely and necessitated the removal of the now-dated 12-year-old system. With input from the Harken factory engineering team, the specifications were agreed upon. The manually driven system would be replaced with six hydraulically driven Harken winches using the tried and tested route of two Harken 1111.3 as primaries and four Harken 990.3 as Mainsheet and Runner Winches.

“During the recent refit/ modifications of Maxi72 'NorthStar' we chose Harken for replacement Winches and Harken ProCare for installation/servicing.

“During a difficult period worldwide all timescales were met, required customisation was discussed/ designed/ manufactured/ delivered and installed with zero issues.

We couldn't be happier with the collaboration with the Harken and Procare teams.'

Pom Green - Project Manager 'Northstar'

"It was a pleasure to work with the team from NorthStar on this project. Once the winch specification was finalised we supplied on-site assistance and mounting templates so their experienced boat builders could prepare the deck prior to the Winch Package delivery.

The installation itself was done in conjunction with Winch Works, our authorised ProCare agents and installers in Palma, who always do a great job!

IMPRESSIVE POWER, On a crash diet.

AUGUST 2021

This is Harken’s latest offering in the growing Air® Winch range. These sophisticated pieces of high-strength steel, aluminium alloy, and carbon were first developed at the request of teams seeking performance to harness the potential of 100’ Ultime Trimarans along with a substantial weight reduction compared to our previous offering in this power range.

These winches provide 9000 kg working loads in a package that includes a 13% larger drum diameter than the Harken 1130STR that preceded it. The larger drum of the 900 lets trimmers apply fewer sheet wraps to the drum, allowing more precise easing while simultaneously controlling very high loads. Paired with a unique downdrive system, this winch can help solo or double-handed sailors deliver the torque required to manage loads created by the incredible righting moment and enormous rigs aboard the Ultimes.

The Air Winch 900 sits 17% lower to the deck, reducing parasitic drag in applications where the winch is mounted outside on deck. It features a new self-tailing design allowing an incredible range of line sizes (from 8 mm to 16 mm). Most important, all of this new geometry is delivered in a winch that is fully 24.5% lighter than the 1130STR. That bears repeating: The drum is 13% larger, yet the whole winch is 24.5% lighter. In applications where budget will allow, the addition of titanium in components appropriate for the load requirements will likely reduce the weight even further.

To optimize performance over long distances, Harken has moved from a grease-only lubrication to a mixture of grease and sealed areas lubricated with oil. Some faster gears live in a sealed area that can be lubricated with oil. Optimal lubrication can also be guaranteed by sealing off important components such as the pawl area for better protection and friction resistance over time.

Like every Air Winch, the 900 comes with a distinctive massive hole in the middle. This was only possible by eliminating 10% of the parts found in the 1130STR and in the process, locating a small and quite compact gear box with the entire transmission positioned next to the transmission crown. All of this lives within the drum, leaving only the memory of the kilos that have been removed.

TP52's SET TO CELEBRATE 20th ANNIVERSARY

AUGUST 2021

The biggest ever fleet of TP52s will meet on the Bay of Palma in August (24th to 28th) in Mallorca, Spain, to celebrate 20 years of the enduring international box-rule class at the Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week & TP52 20th Anniversary Invitational. Racing will run from Tuesday 24th to Saturday 28th August. The Invitational and 52 SUPER SERIES fleets will race on the same courses with different start times, but there will be racing for the combined fleet on Monday for the Official Practice Race and on Friday for separate trophies.

Harken have supported the TP52 Class since its beginning in 2005, working with these elite competitors to develop our Winch, Hardware and Hydraulic systems that will help shape the future of everyone who sails. A full factory service program is set up with the Super Series fleet allowing the ProCare Team to be on hand at each regatta. The Hydraulics systems are also maintained by our US Authorised ProCare Agent, Gorilla Rigging based in in Newport RI.

From the original Aifos, which was one of the “founder members” of the TP52 Mediterranean fleet, through to Karl Kwok’s successful Beau Geste designed as the Brazilian-flagged Onda for the 2018 circuit, the fleet, which will race under IRC handicap, will be a fascinating reminder of the evolution and the popularity of the class in Europe.

Ocean Race V65 Fleet Inspection

JULY 2021

The V65 Fleet have now been around the world twice covering over 60k miles and will soon be embarking on their third circumnavigation of the planet! As you can imagine this puts incredible stress and wear on the systems, the only way to keep these systems working perfectly is a full proactive service program.

Harken ProCare have looked after the One Design fleet since they were first lunched in 2014 - 2015. As a result of this we have a full-service History of each yacht taken at each service stopover. This allows us to monitor the condition of all the Harken equipment, easily spot any trends and proactively replace worn parts prior to any issues occurring on the race track.

By utilising the service history and our experience within the fleet we can spotlight possible areas of concern that may require a more detailed examination prior to the next race. If required we can remove parts and send them back to our Italian facility to be 3D Scanned. This allows us to see any distortion in the part that may take it out of design tolerance. This can help indicate if the part may need replacing.

From our historic service reports and our focused inspection in Genova we are able to construct a recommended refit procedure and parts replacement program to bring the one design V65 fleet back to “Like New” condition prior to their next 27,000 mile lap of the globe!

AC Rotary 2.jpg

REVOLUTIONARY DESIGN

JUNE 2021

INSIDE THE AC75 PART 2: THE ROTARY PUMP

Harken currently offers three sizes of multi-speed, pedestal-driven rotary pumps for Grand-Prix race boats 13.7 - 30.5 m (45 - 100'). They deliver oil faster, more efficiently, and with higher shift points than other pumps of comparable sizes. The 10 and 20 cc pumps shift from 1st to 2nd gear both automatically and manually, with automatic shift points determined by the maximum output of the grinders. If fewer crew are grinding, and not enough power is generated to reach the automatic shift point, pumps can be shifted manually—the 20 cc pump by simply reversing the pedestal handles; the 10 cc pump by using a pull-cord attached to a lever. Pumps are made of corrosion-resistant Hard Lube-anodized aluminium, with aluminium, titanium, and stainless steel components. All pumps include a non-return valve on the outlet to prevent backflow.

KEEP ON ROLLING.......

JUNE 2021

INSIDE THE AC75 PART 1: Ti. CRX TRACK

In summer 2019 the first AC36 test mules started sea trials. These mules while smaller than the eventual AC75s were configured similarly. Foiling monohulls over 25’ were definitely foreign territory. It quickly became apparent that the travellers for these foiling monohulls would be used very differently than any previous America’s Cup boat. Listening to feedback from teams Harken saw opportunity for improvement. These foiling travellers were being adjust very quickly and very frequently. The travellers were seen as more critical than adjusting the mainsheet. The trimmers wanted to keep constant leech tension in the main sail. When the traveller was eased mainsheet load stayed high. Even when eased, there was near maximum working load in the system. There were two areas where teams wanted more than what the current CRX systems were offering. Hardware that was designed win around the world races was showing signs of wear after a few weeks of training sessions. Rollers were having to be replaced more frequently than we had ever seen before. Additionally, the teams were telling us maximum efficiency was of utmost importance even if it came with added mass. A sticky traveller not easing could spell disaster for an AC75.

Captive reel winch service, Huisfit Holland

APRIL 2021

After 6 years of sailing worldwide, it was time for a well-deserved overhaul for the Harken Captive winches.

The maintenance work took place at the Huisfit shipyard in Zaandam in the Netherlands, where the ship is in the shed for a refit. We had access to a beautiful workplace and were able to complete our work quickly and efficiently. The goal was to complete a consistent service and follow this up with a full report outlining the works carried out and any items that may need to be monitored.

After 6 years of intensive use, the captive winches still looked great. The winches have been completely cleaned, inspected and serviced, consumable parts were replaced where necessary.

It was interesting to see that it was not the use but the winch's location that determined the required level of maintenance. A winch located below deck near the engine's air intake was much more affected by the salt air than the winch on the other side of the engine's air exhaust; this winch was like new.

Despite the Corona crisis, we have worked well with the shipyard personnel and crew of the ship. We want to thank Huisfit and the crew for this great collaboration.

Captive Reel Winches Q&A

MARCH 2021

How does the line feed onto the drum?

The line is fed onto the drum with feeder screws that move a 90-degree sheave. Two gears distribute the load more evenly to the sheave. The feeder screws and nuts, plus feeder skate are made of a self-lubricating material.

Winches can be left or right handed based on mounting location aboard the boat.

NEW Harken G-Vang Line

DECEMBER 2020

Harken introduced the G style Mega Yacht vangs as a way to solve the issue of buckling as the compression loads increased over time with the use of heavier furling and park avenue booms on Mega Yachts. Harken engineers solved this issue by eliminating the load on the rod and transferring it to an outer housing tube, therefore significantly increasing the push force for each size vang.

Life at 80 RPM….

NOVEMBER 2020

Have you noticed something different about the way the AC75 grinders are working their pedestals? It’s not what you see in the videos (if you catch a glimpse of them at all as they now practice their art low in their cockpits well out of the airstream); it’s what you don’t. You’ll never see any of the grinders pause, shake their handles or reverse direction when changing gear. Instead they just keep going at a constant cadence, maintaining the optimal 80rpm.
